Same with .thunderbird and .mozilla. The
reason for leaving /home as part of the / (root) filesystem is that I
don't WANT old and busted config files carrying over to a fresh install.

I don't re-use entire Iceweasel and Icedove profiles for the same reason. I backup/restore my bookmarks and address book from within the applications. I keep my mail organized under Local Folders by year, and I backup/restore those using filesystem tools -- it's probably not the best way, but it seems to work (e.g. Icedove seems to tolerate older mail directories/ index files).
