Thanks to the list, I now have X working again. And it was a video issue rather than anything to do with systemd. As suggested, I did the following: + deleted the proprietary nvidia glx libs + deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf + installed xserver-xorg-video-nouveau But now I can only get 1024x768 resolution; I have for several years been running 1600x1200 using Debian on this monitor and video card.
