This looks great, Oliver - in the past, PostgreSQL has caused 90% of my trepidation in upgrading from release to release. Having two different versions available side by side will enable much smoother upgrade for those clients and systems who _really_ don't like us turning off their systems to do an upgrade. One other thing I find, is that we tend to have a bunch of systems that can only start if PostgreSQL is running, and which should be shut down before it. It would be nice if there were hooks into the "start" and "stop" actions that would allow us to control our other daemon processes synchronously with PostgreSQL. A run-parts over a couple of directories /etc/postgresql/<port>/stopping/ and /etc/postgresql/<port>/starting/ would probably do it.
