The trouble is that the broader sense of the word "forum" is still useful in the modern day, and if we allow the word to be used as a shorthand for "Web forum", then when someone tries to use it in the broader sense there will be possibility for confusion. I've encountered that personally, which is why I try to always use the more explicit term "Web forum" when that is what I mean.
