The screen locking functionality requires gdm.
That would explain it. I seem to be using KDM, not GDM, probably because
I've been using KDE for a long time.
Interestingly, I've been finding other strange things that don't work
with Gnome 3, including printing a form letter in LibreOffice, even
though they work in KDE.
