startx does indeed do it, thanks - though I don't need to specify the DISPLAY variable; it just works if I run startx as my other user. So that proves that it is possible to get 2 X servers running. Next step, ideally, is to also have 2 display managers running - ideally gdm3, since that's what I've been using, but anything will do. Preference for something that will let me choose my DE without mucking around with a .xsession file. Any suggestions?
