If you did, and the lined black screen is GUI, then Ctrl+Alt+F2 to a terminal and see what happens. If you get a login prompt, log in as root and fix the problem. Or perhaps uninstall X, and then reinstall it so you can start it with startx, and use a different window manager or desktop environment.
