Does it have to be bash? If you're willing to give zsh a try (It's another bourne-derivative, so the syntax is very similar. I believe it's mostly POSIX compliant, too), then add-ons such as oh-my-zsh[1] or zprezto[2] have syntax-highlighting modules.
