Most likely yes. I have two pci modems here from early 2000. One is a hardware modem, the other is a winmodem with no linux drivers. Both are 3com modems and can read caller id. This may or may not be true for your particular modem. However yes, there are modems from that time that can read caller id. > > If any part of it is useble in Debian, shouldn't it have > registered a new device or two in /dev? > Yes, it should show up as something like /dev/ttyUSB0 (I.E. a usb serial port). > Here is what it did place in syslog minus all the time > stamp information: > > usb 4-2.1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4 > usb 4-2.1: New USB device found, idVendor=05ac, idProduct=1401 > usb 4-2.1: New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=3, SerialNumber=4 > usb 4-2.1: Product: Apple USB Modem > usb 4-2.1: Manufacturer: Motorola, Inc. > usb 4-2.1: SerialNumber: 000000 > usb 4-2.1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice > usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio > Hmmm, interesting. It registers as a sound device, but not as a usb serial port. I'd guess that means you might be able to use it as a speaker phone, provided it also registered as a usb serial port so you could control it. I could be wrong on all this of course. I've used regular rs232 modems, and pci cards before, but not a usb attached modem. Someone who knows better please correct any of the above if that is necessary. http://www.linmodems.org May or may not help you. > Is there any device that will capture callerID and spit > it out to a serial port or similar? > Yes, a GNU/Linux compatible modem.
