All you had to do in aptitude was install it.  

# aptitude install xorg-video-abi-12

If nothing else that would tell you what the problem was and give you 
a chance to solve it.  Did you explore why it didn't want to install 
it automatically?

One of the reasons I love open source is that it gives me choice.  I 
don't like Synaptic.  Fine, I don't have to use Synaptic.  You don't 
like Aptitude.  Fine, you don't have to use Aptitude.
