Debian can be used with older CPUs, than *buntus can.

"All i486 and later processors are still supported" -
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch02s01.html.en#idp5615872

"Support for i586 and lower processors, as well as for i686 processors
without the cmov instruction, was dropped in Ubuntu 10.10. Most i686 and
later processors are still supported" -
https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/installation-guide/i386/hardware-supported.html

In the past Edubuntu provided a combination of nice software.
http://www.edubuntu.org/ nowadays seems to use Unity, but another *buntu
could be installed and after that the Edubuntu meta packages, so assumed
the processor shouldn't be an issue, than this is an advantage of
*buntu.
