Until a couple of weeks ago I had a really strange speed problem with FF/Iceweasel. It would run really happily even with multiple tabs open, but as soon as I opened a second browser window it would grind to a halt. If I was (eventually) able to close one of the two browser windows it would speed back up again. This fault appeared with Mozilla's vanilla Firefox as well as Iceweasel. I was never able to get a good enough handle on the problem to report it as a bug, but now using the latest Mozilla release it's fine again.
