In my config I have something similar across 2 lines (although I use
goobook now - google address book integration). 

So something like this instead should work: 

  set query_command = "abook --mutt-query '%s'"
  macro generic,index,pager A "<pipe-message>abook --add-email-quiet<return>" 
"add the sender address to abook"
