You can use mutt as an IMAP client, in which case you need a constant connection to gmail, but gmail does the filtering. If that's the case, you just need to tell mutt about the folders that gmail has set up with settings in your .muttrc for spool, inbox and mailboxes. or... you can use some other program to pull the IMAP mail down to your local box, and then use mutt as a mailspool client, with no further gmail connection needed until you send email.
