I stand corrected. I did some research, and there does in fact appear to be a text mode in debian per the text boot option. Apologies if my statement saying that there's no such thing as text mode in debian caused confusion. This does in fact seem to be the equivalent of not starting graphical desktop in a certain run level as is the case in some other distributions.
