The more backups the better.

If you use GNOME or XFCE + an external USB device that does fulfill the
EU regulations, then

- disconnect the drive when it isn't needed
- remove gvfs, so the drive won't spin down and up again and again

I'm using just one USB HDD to backup my data, but I removed gvfs and I
disconnect it sometimes, but it's always in the same room, as the
internal HDDs, so not only a fire, but also gamma rays or even
kidnapping the flat by aliens would remove my world-important data from
this planet ;).

AFAIK there isn't absolute security.
