I've used Kompozer for debian for several years as a rough out system
for web development. It is not available in Wheezy as far as I can tell
using the search feature of synaptic, other than the older Squeeze
version. Is there a differently named version for Debian or do we have
to go 'roll our own'. I just want to check before I roll up mu sleeves
an do that.

My first reaction was:
download
./configure
make
make install

But then I looked at the upstream site (www.kompozer.net) and discovered:
Latest stable version: 0.7.10 (2007-08-30)
Warning: this version does NOT work with recent GNU/Linux distros.
KompoZer 0.7 is not compatible with GTK ≥ 2.14 — expect crashes. If you’re using a Linux distro that ships KompoZer 0.7.10 with GTK ≥ 2.14, please inform the package maintainers about this.

So... looks like an upstream problem. You could probably make something work by linking to GTK <2.14.

Some alternatives to look at (and a family tree):

Mozilla (contained "Composer")
-> SeaMonkey (contains Composer) -> available as Iceape for Debian (looks like its packaged for Wheezy)
-> NVU (discontinued)
----> Kompozer (stalled, doesn't work w/ recent distros)
----> Bluegriffon (don't see a Debian package, there seem to be Ubuntu packages and sources at http://www.bluegriffon.org/)

Looks to me like Iceape is the simplest way to go.
