Sorry, I was writing faster than I was thinking :D.

You need to reboot or to restart stuff as graphics drivers to use the
new modules with a new kernel, usually people anyway reboot to use a new
kernel.

To build the modules, it's still true, first upgrade the headers, than
VBox, graphics drivers etc. and than upgrade the kernel, so dkms will
rebuild the needed modules.
