But you should have a look at "Software Settings" in the "system tools", make sure it checks for updates. Mine is set for "Daily" and Automatically install is set at "nothing". The icon pops up from time to time, but it's not orange as with update-manager, it's gray. Otherwise they are pretty similar in shape.
