You should be able to edit the gnome-terminal profile and set the
colors.  Start with the Edit menu pick, then Profile Preferences, then
Colors, then pick your desired color theme.

Otherwise I would start by looking at your X resources.  Or perhaps
just setting them explicltly.  The contents depend upon what is in
your ~/.Xresources file.  That was standard prior to all of the
current happy desktop way of doing things.  You might still have some
lint left behind.
