The GNOME 3 in Debian 7 IIRC requires hardware acceleration. If the system doesn't have compatible graphics then even though it ran GNOME 2 okay GNOME 3 will run in "fallback mode". One of the big problems of upgrading is that GNOME 2 is lost. This has been discussed much on this list. See the archives. Many people upgrading from GNOME 2 escape from GNOME 3 by installing XFCE or LXDE in order to get a traditional desktop. You might try XFCE and see if it meets your needs. Bob
