No, update-notifier package was not installed.

The reason seems to be that, from now on, GNOME cannot be installed without 
PackageKit. :-/


That sounds about typical of the way GNOME does things nowadays, depending on things a lot of Linux desktop users find "vile."

Though personally I do like systemd. I wish Debian used it by default.
