make a difference but my information says it should be "set root".
root="(hd0,msdos1)" is used in v 1.98 and earlier.
set root="(hd0,msdos1)" is used in v 1.99 and later.
Anyway, using supergrub sometimes messes up the OS grub.
Suggest Sebastian redo his grub
# grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
# update-grub
