Bad was a discontinuity in the video stream every 5 to 10
seconds. Worse is a discontinuity in the video stream every 2
seconds.

Yes, the three ide modules that I listed were in /etc/modules,
probably put there by the Lenny installation. I know I didn't
put them there manually when I upgraded to Squeeze and they
carried over into Wheezy.

Thanks for the response. This problem is now OBE since I
removed the Wheezy installation today. The upgrade from Squeeze
was such a disaster, and this is only one of the problems, that I
give up. As I stated in one other post, this laptop is an
Athlon 486 with Unichrome graphics and IDE drives. My main
computer is a desktop with an Athlon 686, Unichrome graphics and
IDE drives. I don't dare try to run Wheezy on that based on this
experience because I cannot afford to lose the functionality and
data on desktop machine. My early reading on Wheezy indicated
that support for this type of machine was problematic so I tried
the laptop first as a sacrificial machine.
