i've just thought, this is a new computer, new this year and its not got a 'open-gl' capable graphics card, not at least with the radeon free drivers. So, if cinnamon needs 'open-gl' capabilities then no way will it run on this machine! But i do have the relevant legacy drivers from ati which maybe i should install, which would hopefully get rid of all these problems. It doesn't play Gnome 3 , just drops me back to the next DE in the list, which happens to be 'enlightenment', which to me is just a load of eye-candy!
