It seems to be bad form to reply to your own email but the answer is .... delete/rename /var/lib/clamav/daily.cld and mirrors.dat. This forces clamav to redownload them, which should be working okay then.
According to #clamav on irc.freenode.net there were some problems at clamav HQ about ten days ago, which caused this problem. Keep warm :) Sharon.
