I use this script in spectrwm: # switch to icewm xinit /home/ac/.xxinitrc -- :1 & where .xxinitrc is the same as my ordinary .xinitrc except that it starts a different WM (icewm) I then shift between them with Shift-Alt-F8 and Shift-Alt-F7. No doubt you could have three or more WMs if you wanted. I do this because I like tiling WMs but they don't do very well with programs that open a lot of windows, such as xsane or gimp; a stacking WM is better for these.
