service not working

what could be the reason of a service not working, while it's init.d 
script works ?

I have


NOT WORKING :
# service slapd start
Starting OpenLDAP: slapd failed!

WORKING :
# /etc/init.d/slapd start
Starting OpenLDAP: slapd

what could be the reason of the service failure ?
