I had almost the same problem this week. My board is an ASUS K7M, don't know how far away that is from your hardware. Eventually, I got the sound working although I don't quite know how. My /etc/modules now contains only the entry "via82cxxx_audio" and everything is mostly fine, however, I'm quite sure that it did not work when I tried the same driver with lsmod on the running system.
