Two separate issue are involved. The major one is that his drive
hardware is failing or has failed. If he can copy the drive's contents to
another (same size or larger) unit (using ddrescue), the file system may
be substantially intact. If the file system isn't mountable or if it has
major corruption, photorec may recover some of the files.
If the hardware is not functioning, it's probably time to call in the
pros to recover the data.
