I have one laptop whose sole reason for existence is to serve as a test-bed for my hopefully educational experiments.
My torture test is up to a dozen Debian installs per week.
On related issue I've already been asked "Out of pure curiosity, why this machine to be "chastened" in this way?" :)

Debian Installer documentation does not begin to cover many of my "what if...." questions.
[nor would I expect it to ;]

I had a germ of a possible idea that possibly might make it into a very personalized preseed.cfg [enough qualifiers there?]. So I decided to test feasibility manually. Initially I gave it a 30-40% probability of success. I got an unanticipated *MODE* of failure.

To be feasible, my eventual goal would require manual partitioning with:
  1. NO swap partition
  2. Each successive install would be to a LOGICAL partition:
      a. of nGB
      b. at high end of available disk space

The outline of my test procedure would be [after deleting existing partitions] to do multiple installs with:
      a. no SWAP partition
b. one 20GB ext3 logical partition mounted at / at high end existing disk space c. at "Software selection" menu chose none of checkable boxes d. after re-boot do "apt-get install" of gdm, gedit, and gparted
      e. reboot and see if all works
      e. repeat

Success rate ~ 50%
Reproducibility - Lousy

1st trial, 1st install, 1st try
no swap, after "su & password" attempted "apt-get install gdm3 gedit gparted"
result - massive crash
as there had been warning message of strangeness possible without SWAP, not surprised

1st trial, 1st install, 2nd try
no swap, after "su & password" did:
   "apt-get install gdm3"
   "apt-get install gedit"
   "apt-get install gparted"
result - success

1st trial, 2nd install
many error messages implying defective DVD
examining hard disk with live edition of Gparted - 2nd partition much smaller than first

deleted all partitions

2nd trial, 1st install
no swap, after "su & password" did:
   "apt-get install gdm3"
   "apt-get install gedit"
   "apt-get install gparted"
result - success

2nd trial, 2nd install
no swap, after "su & password" did:
   "apt-get install gdm3"
   "apt-get install gedit"
   "apt-get install gparted"
result - success

3rd trial, 1st install
no swap, after "su & password" attempted "apt-get install gdm3 gedit gparted"
result - success

I do not have enough for a formal bug report.
Do I have enough to justify ME spending time to get reproducible results?
Are there suggestions of permutations I should attempt?
What/how capture relevant info?

Comments please.
