You may be pleased to hear that this has been reported as bugs #644534
and #683257.
In future, you may try switching to a virtual console and running
"xscreensaver-command -display :0 -exit" (though you may need to fiddle
with xset permissions, YMMV). Alternatively, just restarting lightdm
should work, too.
There are lighter options than xscreensaver, :-) Such as xautolock +
xtrlock, or xautolock + any other light locker...

Screen savers are pretty but with the advent of LCD / Plasma screens
they are no longer needed. To really save your monitor you need to put
it in standby as soon as possible. The old CRT type monitors needed
something to constantly change the image on the screen to keep the
electron beam from burning a permanent pattern onto the CRT face. The
new technologies don't have this problem but do have a wear and tear
problem with the back lighting system. So turn off the lighting if you
want to save your monitor. Then again, screen savers are interesting art
work.
