I got a tip from a newsgroup, where I was told to issue the commands xlsfonts -fn "-*-courier-medium-r-*" xlsfonts -fn "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*" And if these commands showed any promising fonts, I should put them into the file .Xresources. My .Xresources now looks like this: Emacs.pane.menubar.font: -bitstream-courier-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-1 Emacs.menu*.font: -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-1 Emacs.dialog*.font: -bitstream-courier-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-1 Emacs*font: -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-1 Emacs.font: -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-1 This makes my Emacs almost usable. Although the "start up screen" still shows only empty rectangles, other buffers are OK. (Issue a "xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources" after editing .Xresources.) Asbj.S.
