I made good expierience, by moving gdm, xdm or kdm (whatever you are using) 
just right out of the way. I simply moved it form /etc/init.d/ into my /root 
folder.

Then I could manually start X by the command "startx" and could see what 
happened.

If X hanges, you can easily stop X by "CTL-C" (STRG-C), or with "CTRL-ALT-
BACKWARD" (STRG-ALT-RÜCKSCHRITT).
