Yes, I know, but sometimes there's no other way to get the job done.

What I wanted to mean is that, other than the nuisance that is having to 
deal with external packages, there's shouldn't be drawbacks for going 
that way. 

While I would be very cautious for getting packages from repositories 
owned by users I don't know, I wouldn't mind installing the mainstream 
kernel sources, Intel Xorg drivers or Mozilla packages from their 
upstream sites.
