When I do: pulseaudio --start <cr> There is a short pause then the message: ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave appears on the screen. Hitting enter again then typing: echo $? <cr> 0 is returned. I'm using speech synthesis as provided by the kernel and am in a command line environment so the sound system worked enough to get debian speaking before I ran pulseaudio --start. What needs configuring to clear this error?
