Here is a reference for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_supply_unit_(computer)#ATX12V_standard Most newer motherboards now require this addtional power connector. But if your power supply does not provide one then you can add an adaptor and convert one of the 4-pin power connectors to the ATX12V 4-pin motherboard power connector. That works fine.
