Turns out that I inflicted the problem by creating udev rules for the purpose of making the Unibrain Fire-i camera work. peter@joule:~$ grep edit /lib/udev/rules.d/*acl* # do not edit this file, it will be overwritten on update So I created two files. peter@joule:~$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/70-acl.rules # Rule added for IIDC 1.04, Unibrain Fire-i camera, 2012-06-15. SUBSYSTEM=="firewire", ATTR{units}=="*0x00a02d:0x00100*", GROUP="video" peter@joule:~$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/91-permissions.rules # Rule added for IIDC 1.04, Unibrain Fire-i camera, 2012-06-15. SUBSYSTEM=="firewire", ATTR{units}=="*0x00a02d:0x00100*", GROUP="video" /etc/udev/rules.d/ must be the "right" place for these rules. Did I choose the file names badly or what? Thanks, ...
