You add the sudo command?

No.

However:
"root: Root is (typically) the superuser."

Perhaps you want to add a group similar to adm and staff?

No.

What exactly have you done?

I have only installed some daily updates. An update (I assume) changed the normal behavior.

Perhaps not completely correct:
http://www.debianadmin.com/providing-root-privileges-for-users-using-sudo.html

I do *NOT* want to use sudo. The change from a different authenticator to the new one occurred during a recent update. I do not want the change.

Foe example:
"For more commands, run your shell with sudo.

sudo sh (if sh is your shell.)"

I would use sudo -i instead.

Getting OT, apologize.

You are misunderstanding. Synaptic asked for the root password in order to run. This was part of the normal GNOME procedure. Suddenly, after an update, it began authenticating Ubuntu-style, through sudo, and no longer wants the root password. Instead, it asks for an ordinary user password. I do not like this.

From Arch Linux:

"Enable explicitly defined commands only for user USER_NAME on host
HOST_NAME:

USER_NAME
HOST_NAME=/sbin/halt,/sbin/poweroff,/sbin/reboot,/usr/bin/pacman -Syu" -
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sudo

I don't care anything about Arch Linux. Only Debian should be relevant. Possibly also Ubuntu in this case, since it seems to be doing the Ubuntu thing now.

There might be several ways to avoid a password, depending to the
target.
PolicyKit?

I do not want to avoid a password, I want it to ask for the *right* password.
