Probably want to skip that "--root-directory" option, unless you're

I've tried it with and without.

Why? What does grub-install(8) have to say about the option?

Man no longer mentions it in Wheezy it does talk about --boot-directory as a way of putting the GRUB images in a directory other than /boot/grub

In squeeze --root-directory is still in the man page & it appears they do the same thing, I don't think either option effect grubs use of the MBR
