You can open PDF files with The Gimp, there's no need to install 
additional packages. There is also the old xpdf though I dunno about its 
dependencies.

Sure, the printer is supported but that does not avoid the possibility of a 
bug in the printer driver or elsewhere :-)

What I meant is that you can select a different driver for the printer (for 
instance, generic pcl 6) and test with it.

If that's the underlying problem, yup. Now you will have to find someone with 
that printer to run the tests.
