I don't know where it comes from since my system has virtually no ppd on disk. I created two printers, one with the cups provided ppd, and another one with brother's, and they are quite different. The label for the cups ppd is: «Brother HL-4050CDN Foomatic/Postscript (recommended) (color, 2-sided printing)» The label for Brother's ppd is: «Brother HL-4050CDN BR-Script3» Maybe the cups ppd is somehow generated from /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/Brother-HL-4050CDN.xml (from the foomatic-db package) Or maybe it is downloaded, or extracted from an archive, I don't know. The openprinting-ppds packages are not installed on the test system, but cups does create a ppd somehow, and in this printer's case it doesn't work well.
