Brilliant! That worked! For some reason I was only trying with lpr. But I did have to open the file in Acrobat, select Print, select "Custom" printer which fortunately opened up a free text box with a printing command where I entered: lp -d PDF > lpr -P PDF<file> For some strange reason lpr -P PDF will fail here with lpr: PDF: unknown printer So now I am able to purge Acrobat reader, hopefully to never see it again.
