While I admire the work the Nouveau guys are doing, after suffering for more than 4 years with an Nvidia GPU+chipset on my desktop, I just replaced the motherboard with a one based on the AMD E350 fusion chip, and suddenly all my problems are gone. One of the best $200 I've spent recently. Only remaining problem: Gnome.
