I have that setting available under Firefox's menu → Print... → Print... → Options tab. It is indeed an option available for every printer I have setup (either virtual PDF printers, HP laserjet printers, Ricoh copier...). But I'm using GNOME and this can be make a difference. Read CUPS logs and also dmesg/syslog to find out more information about the USB disconnects (if CUPS can't detect the printer I guess is because the USB port resets, right?). What's the status of the printer under CUPS web interface?
