Have you thought of downloading and trying a Debian live install image (e.g., http://www.debian.org/CD/live/index.en.html )? With it you should be able to get a running system with internet connection and USB storage ability without touching the hard drive. In case something doesn't work with your permanent Debian installation you can always boot with the live system and get what you need via internet. -- Best regards, Jörg-Volker.
