Hello All, On the advice of those more expert, about this site, I am starting a new thread. Anyway the problem has changed. I have looked at permissions on the /etc/ppp/peers/highstream.net file. I didn't copy that file ( I'm switching back and forth from SuSE to debian). (I need a common /home?) But for the above file everyone: u g o has x-execute privledge. Doing whoami ; grep dip /etc/group got the reponse: dip:x:30:john. I'm john. Let me describe the present situation. Now when I use kppp to dial out there are no error messages. The kppp statistics box shows a graph what appears to be connection and the virtual modem lights flash. I thought that this was a false connection because lynx reported that it couldn't connect and mozilla also couldn't find any url's typed or clicked on from the debian local page. But when I opened a terminal and did poff kppd (which was running gave me a pppd died message and a long list (which follows) of what had gone on from the start of connection. I am going back to look at it again for awhile. the responses help because it gets me to look at other things. Thanks very much. JY
