You have to install from scratch. If you want to minimize downtime, create your new installation with debootstrap. It will spare you the ugly ia32-libs package, but crossgrading is still not possible. Yours truly attempted it, and dpkg refused to replace the i386 libc-bin with the amd64 version¹.
