Last time I looked, firefox, at least, supported proxying via socks.
I use Firefox over socks regularly. Socks host 127.0.0.1 port 8080.
To set up the tunnel:
ssh -CNfqD8080 u...@server.tld
It helps to have passwordless access to the server
