That's exactly the problem, and precisely why I have moved on to LXDE.
Well, for years I have been using FVWM. It does everything one could
possibly want, except not quite what Compiz does for eyecandy. That was the
reason I moved to Gnome. Will try LXDE and XFCE4, I guess.

Now I've been running it for about a week I am really starting to like
it EXCEPT FOR ONE THING
I really wish the hot spot for shrinking the desktop could be moved to
the bottom left. I keep accidentally using it when moving to the
browser back button. (DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO MOVE IT)
Apart from that I am adjusting my way of working - which includes in the
evening watching tv (mythtv) on my primary and working in parallel on my
secondary screen, but during the ad breaks being able switch main screen
desktop to some useful info whilst leaving the secondary set up as it is.
In the old gnome I never used the multiple desktops I had set up, now I
find them useful places to put things out of the way. And Linus' famous
gripe that he hit the terminal button to get one and it just displayed
his current one - I now fully understand why it is the way it is and its
absolutely right.
I can move my mail (icedove) to another workspace, but when I click the
mail icon on my "dock" (on the left side) it jumps straight to it.
